How we work

What once began as an organizational experiment has since evolved into the heart behind life and work at Galois: the Collaborative Web. The mission of the Collaborative Web is to foster an organization that simultaneously provides a workplace where we truly want to be, cares well for Galois operational viability, and stays true to our core principles.

Defaulting to Transparency

We pursue deep trust with one another in many ways at Galois, and chief among them is our radical practice of transparency. Our approach to transparency can be summed up in one sentence: Our default is to make any piece of information transparent within the walls of Galois.

Matching People to Projects: How Finding Work Works

With no traditional hierarchy or managers, the process of finding projects on work can seem daunting. How do we ensure that research engineers find projects so that both project needs and individual needs (like interesting work and career growth opportunities) are met?

Compensation: A Forward-Looking, Transparent Approach to Pay

Galwegian compensation is determined by the results that they have promised to provide in the future. The compensation process, individual salaries, and criteria for salary changes are transparent to the entire company.

Customers and Performers: A Company Without Managers

At Galois, we don’t have managers in the traditional sense, nor do we operate within a fixed hierarchy of rigid positions and titles. How then do we organize ourselves within this seemingly loose structure? The cornerstone of our work together is the relationship between internal customers and performers.

Galois is now 100% Employee Owned! Here's What That Means

In June 2023, Galois officially became 100% employee-owned—realizing a vision 10 years in the making. This significant milestone was made possible through our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), introduced in 2013 after Galois’s founder John Launchbury learned of ESOPs’ benefits during his “Blue Sky”[1] time, then introduced it to Galois as part of his long standing vision of employee ownership. Over the years since, the company and the ESOP have progressively bought ownership from John and other shareholders, finally purchasing the last of the shares this year. But what exactly is an ESOP?

Stewards: Nurturing People

We each have our own career goals, ambitions, and specific experiences we look for at work. How do we ensure that everyone is thinking about their long-term goals and career and getting what they need out of their day-to-day at Galois? Enter the role of the Steward.

The Boundary Policy: Doing Purposefully Good Work

The boundary policy refers to how we set up boundaries for the work we feel good about doing vs. that which we would rather not do. In short: we draw the line on projects where we believe the intended use of our work is primarily non-damaging. This might sound strange coming from a company that works with the Department of Defense, but that is actually why it’s so important.

Galois has offices in Portland, OR; Minneapolis, MN; Dayton, OH; and Arlington, VA. We are also a remote-friendly work environment.
