Back in 2015, Galois Chief Scientist and Founder, John Launchbury, started developing and discussing “Three Waves of AI” as a framework for understanding the new burst of machine learning developments that were taking place, and to put DARPA I2O’s research portfolio into context. Now, eight years later, ChatGPT and friends have burst on the scene.
In this context, John returns to his “three waves” as a helpful framework to understand LLMs and provide framing for discussions about how we can leverage these new capabilities.
Watch his recent talk on the subject below.
Abstract:
“In 2015 I started talking about Three Waves of AI as a framework for understanding the new burst of machine learning developments that were taking place, and to put DARPA I2O’s research portfolio into context. Eight years later, ChatGPT and friends have burst on the scene, and many crazy claims are made about them. It is timely to recall the trajectory AI is taking, using that perspective to understand LLMs, and provide some framing for discussions about how we may choose to leverage these new capabilities.”
